The Light (11/20/2024)

When you are in the dark you can’t see. It keeps things hidden.

Being in the dark encourages you to do things that are forbidden.

It may make you feel like you are free.

But in reality you’re not. You’re just a prisoner holding your own key.

Darkness keeps you wandering in guilt and shame.

Keeps you pondering about life. Is this all there is? Is it just a game?

Russian roulette with your soul; makes you feel like you’re in control.

But the darkness is misleading.

If you allow it to, it will keep you held captive.

In the shadows pleading.

On the ground, fetal position, curled.

But today you can make the choice to call out a name.

JESUS!

The One who is the way, the truth, and the life.

The One who is the light of the world.

The Light. I love reading God’s word. It’s “living and active. Sharper than a double edged sword” is what the Bible says in Hebrews 4:12. What does that mean? It means we can rely on God’s word to help us through anything we face in this life. His word is powerful. We can speak scripture over our life to fight against the enemy who tries to tell us that it’s okay to remain in the dark.

One day while at work, I was on my way back into the building from my lunch break. It was a cloudy and dreary day. It had been for about a week. I remember passing a coworker by and I over heard him say while looking up at the sky, “Where is the sun? It’s so depressing.” I immediately put this into a spiritual perspective after hearing that. It made me think about how empty and depressing our life is without the Son, Jesus. It’s crazy how the weather can affect our mood when there is no sunlight for days. I have experienced that feeling before. But once that sunlight peeks through and brightens the sky you can’t help but to smile and feel good. The touch of its warmth against your skin makes it feel like a bear hug. It’s just something about that light. It’s just something about Jesus, the Light, who makes our day so much brighter and worth living for.

I came across the scripture shown below one day and it inspired me to write this poem. It made me think of the former path I used to take, living for the world. In darkness. In the cold. Hiding my sinful ways, but the only person I wasn’t hiding it from was Jesus. Many times He tried to call me out of the darkness, but I was comfortable there. It was familiar. It felt good for a while, until it didn’t. I grew weary of going in the same circles. My life wasn’t flourishing. Satan wants nothing more than to keep us trapped and thinking that there is nothing better than where we are at. He wants us to think that we are alone. Or that no one cares. Most plants need proper sunlight to grow right? Jesus is the light that is needed in our lives in order for us to grow into who God created us to be.

When we make the decision to follow Jesus there is so much more positivity, peace, and freedom that comes with it. Of course, everyday won’t be perfect because we will still face difficult seasons. At least we won’t have to face them alone. When I rededicated my life to Him in 2018, He slowly began to change me from the inside out. The chains that held me captive had broken and I was set free. He began to pull the weeds out of my life that were choking me. The weeds that were hindering me from growing and being used by God for His glory. My lifestyle changed as I stepped out of the darkness and into His warm light. Walking in the light not only helped me spiritually, but personally. The life change I’ve experienced now has a positive impact on my children’s life. God’s light shines through me in their life, as I guide them to Him.

I encourage you today to make that decision to step out of whatever darkness you find yourself in. There is hope. His name is Jesus. Reach out for His hand and allow Him to pull you out of the darkness and into His marvelous light.

✝️“Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, ‘I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.’”
